Explore Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland and surrounding geological wonderland that features some of Iceland’s most awe-inspiring natural attractions
Leaving from Akureyri this tour takes you along the eastern shores of Iceland's longest fjord Eyjafjördur through lush farmlands and beautiful mountain landscape.
The first stop is at the picturesque Goðafoss waterfall where in 999 A.D: one the most dramatic event in the history of Iceland unfolded,- when Iceland's Law-speaker, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw pagan idols and relics of the Old Viking religion into the waterfall which marked the end of that religion in Iceland.
From Goðafoss the tour continues through the valley of Reykjadalur to Lake Mývatn district where you'll spend time exploring the most amazing landscape dotted with pseudo craters formed in a volcanic eruption
Lake Mývatn and surrounding wetlands are registered as one of the internationally important wetlands, along with the Laxá river which flows out of the lake. The area is paradise for birdwatchers featuring an array of waders and marsh dwellers and one of the world‘s most diverse duck species composition.
