This ice cave tour takes you inside Langjokull glacier to experience one of the most amazing ice caves in Iceland. Seeing the glacier from the inside is a unique experience. The network underground is composed of an extensive system of tunnels and chambers that stretch several hundred meters into the solid ice cap towards a breathtaking natural ice cave at the heart of the glacier
Iceland is a country shaped by glaciers. And even today a large portion of the country is covered by glaciers. This tour is one of the most exciting and unique ways to experience and better understand the tremendous power of the glaciers that have carved out the country’s landscape. Made possible by Iceland’s top geophysicists and engineers, the ice cave in Langjökull glacier is a manmade tunnel that provides a radically different view of an ice cap: from the inside.
We begin our journey through the scenic mountains and valleys of West Iceland. Heading northwest from Reykjavik we eventually turn inland towards the charming Húsafell area with its ancient Birch forest and small village. There we will transfer to the massive off-road trucks that will bring us up the snow-covered ice cap.
Reaching the entrance to the ice cave, we start our exploration into the heart of the ice cap with an expert glacier guide. Stretching several hundred metres into the glacier, the ice cave presents the most brilliant shades of crystalline blue within its many tunnels and caverns.
Our expert guide will give us an inside look (literally!) into how the glacier was formed and also how the country’s top geophysicists and engineers came together to create this unique tunnel into the glacier. We will take between 45 and 60 minutes to explore this extraordinary cave before heading back to Húsafell where lunch is available for purchase.
On our way back to Reykjavík we will make one last stop to see two of West Iceland’s most renowned waterfalls. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls at the edge of a lava field, where glacier water emerges and trickles down into the Hvítá river, giving it an eerie blue glow. And like much else in Iceland, Barnafoss has a harrowing story behind its name, which you can learn about at this final stop before we return to Reykjavík.
