With a significant portion of its land mass covered in glaciers, Iceland is a country packed with sub-zero adventures and this tour is no exception. Riding a snowmobile on a majestic glacier to reach the impressive man-made wonder of the ice tunnel deep into the ice cap truly is a once-in-a-lifetime journey!
The Scenic Route to the Inland West
We begin our journey through the scenic mountains and valleys of West Iceland. Heading northwest from Reykjavik we eventually turn inland towards the charming Húsafell area with its ancient Birch forest and small village. There we will transfer to the massive off-road trucks that will take us to the edge of the glacier.
Adventures on Ice
The trucks will drop us at Jaki base camp at the edge of Langjökull glacier, where the snowmobiles await and the glacier adventure begins. After suiting up with the necessary equipment and a safety briefing from the snowmobile guide, we start our adventure up the glacier.
Snowmobiling is the ultimate way to explore the icy wonderland of the glacier. You can expect a ride of about 30 minutes as we journey up the snow-covered cap, which offers a rare photographic opportunity of a unique landscape.
Into the Glacier
At the end of our ride, we step off the snowmobiles and begin our exploration into the heart of the ice cap with an expert glacier guide. Stretching several hundred metres into the glacier, the ice cave presents the most brilliant shades of crystalline blue within its many tunnels and caverns.
Our expert guide will give us an inside look (literally!) into how the glacier was formed and also how the country’s top geophysicists and engineers came together to create this unique tunnel into the glacier. We will take between 45 and 60 minutes to explore this extraordinary cave before returning to Húsafell where lunch is available for purchase.
Waterfalls of the West
On our way back we will make one last stop to see two of West Iceland’s most renowned waterfalls. Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls at the edge of a lava field, where glacier water emerges and trickles down into the Hvítá river, giving it an eerie blue glow. And like much else in Iceland, Barnafoss has a harrowing story behind its name, which you will learn at this final stop before we return to Reykjavík.
