Travel from Reykjavik on this two-day tour, experiencing the most iconic sights of the South Coast with our best guides. An overnight South Coast adventure includes exploration of the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Vík town, a trip to stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, overnight stay at Gerði Guesthouse and an exhilarating hike on Svínafellsjökull glacier.
On South Coast, Jökursárlón Glacier Lagoon & Glacier tour, you will travel along Iceland's South Coast on the narrow strip of lush farmland that cuts between mountains, glaciers, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. The route is lined with natural treasures, including the iconic Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Skaftafell National Park, and Vatnajökull glacier to name but a few. Passing the southern edge of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier roughly midway between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Skaftafell National Park offers magnificent views of glaciers, rivers and endless plains of sand. Skaftafell is a part of Vatnajökull Glacier National Park, which stretches over an area of 14,000 square km, or roughly 10 times the size of London.
JÖKULSÁRLÓN GLACIER LAGOON
When you think nothing can beat the scenery, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon opens up before your eyes and takes your breath away. The 250-m deep and roughly 18-square-km lagoon is often filled with colossal chunks of floating ice that have calved from the glacier. With icebergs in various shades of white and blue, the lagoon’s extraordinary scenery is popular with travelers, photographers, and film-makers from all over the world. Different bird species can be seen feeding in and around the lagoon, and seals are a fairly common sight both at the mouth of the lagoon and at the seaside beach.
At the end of the day, we will be accommodated at Gerði Guesthouse. You are relaxing for the remainder of the evening or if you still have the energy head-on optional other activities like a walk to the coast, visiting a museum close by, tips to the glacier, and other hiking possibilities and places of interest in the area. You can even request a Northern Lights wake up call to your hotel room for the ultimate experience. On clear winter nights, the hotel’s remote location is ideal for viewing the Northern Lights if they appear.
DAY TWO - GLACIER HIKE
On day two, you can kick off your day by enjoying an excellent breakfast (included in the tour price) before starting the day’s activities. We then travel to Vatnajökull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe, where we will embark on a fascinating glacier hike on the part of the iceberg, named Svínafellsjökull glacier: It is the southwestern outlet of the Vatnajökull ice cap. This is the perfect way to enjoy outdoor activities in the fresh mountain air and get to know this magnificent natural phenomenon while at the same time enjoying the surroundings and majestic mountain views.
During the tour, passengers will be equipped with necessary safety gear, and receive instructions from the guide, acquire knowledge about the glacier, and view some unique ice sculpture and crevasse formations.
Afterward, we return to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where you have some more time to admire before we head back towards Reykjavík with a stop at the seaside village of Vík where dinner is available for purchase. Our last stop is arguably the most picturesque waterfall in Iceland. At 60 meters tall, Seljalandsfoss waterfall cascades down from ancient sea cliffs into a shallow pool. Weather permitting, visitors can walk behind the waterfall, which makes for some fantastic photo ops with spectacular views out to the countryside.
