Tour Itinerary

Your South Iceland day tour from Reykjavík will take you over a spectacular mountain pass and through lush farmlands to the South Coast.

Enjoy astonishing views as we drive along Iceland’s famous Ring Road, flanked by rugged mountains, glittering glaciers, and towering volcanoes.

Watch out for Eyjafjallajökull, where an enormous eruption stopped the world’s air traffic in 2010!

Look one way for thrilling glimpses of Iceland’s marvelous natural landscapes and sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

On this unforgettable South Coast Iceland tour, you will also experience the powerful beauty of Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

This is where the river Seljalandsá tumbles off the Eyjafjallajökull glacier more than 60 meters into a deep pool. And you can even walk behind the waters to see the cascade from the other side if you don’t mind getting wet!

Close by stands Skógafoss, another majestic waterfall, one of the most famous in Iceland and often featured in Hollywood movies, TV shows, and music videos!

Your next treat will be a memorable stroll on one of the finest beaches in the world! Reynisfjara black sand beach has won accolades from National Geographic and TripAdvisor, and you’ll soon see why!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How far away is the South Coast from Reykjavik?

It doesn’t take very long to reach the start of the South Coast route after we leave the capital city, Reykjavík. After 45 minutes, we’ll cross a high mountain pass (Hellisheiði) and sweep past the hot spring village of Hveragerði. Next, it’ll take about two hours to reach Seljalandsfoss and another 30 minutes to arrive at Skógafoss from there. After that, it’s another half-hour journey from Skógafoss to the black sand beach at Reynisfjara. And then it’s a short 15-minute hop around the headland to reach the last stop, Vík í Mýrdal. Returning to the capital from there will take about three hours.

2. How long will my South Coast Iceland Day Tour take?

Starting with a convenient pick-up from the city, your South Coast Iceland Tour and the return journey will last ten to eleven hours in total. The trip includes a minimum of 30 minutes at Selljalandsfoss Waterfall, Skogafoss Waterfall, and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach.

3. What does the South Coast Day Tour include?

The tour includes convenient city pick-ups and a comfortable journey in one of our modern coaches, with expert commentary and support from one of our professional tour guides in English. Enjoy the free WiFi and USB charging points onboard, so you can make the most of your time when you visit Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black sand beach, and Vík í Mýrdal.

4. How long is the South Coast Day Tour?

The overall distance from the city to the South Coast and back is approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers).

5. Can you enjoy a day on the South Coast if the weather is bad?

Icelanders have a saying: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.” So that means you need to prepare for all eventualities. Bring waterproof clothes, dress in light layers that you can take off and put back on quickly, and wear sturdy waterproof shoes with good grip!

6. Where can you eat during the South Coast Day Tour?

We ask you not to eat and drink when you’re on board our coaches, but don’t worry about getting hungry! Several little towns and villages on the route have great cafes and restaurants where you can grab something to eat and drink. We’ll pick the best ones as we travel along the Ring Road on the South Coast.

7. Where are the pick-up locations for the South Coast tour?

Where possible, we will collect you from all major hotels in the greater Reykjavík area. In the city center, tour buses cannot always park outside the hotels, so we will pick you up from designated bus stops instead. We also pick up from the cruise ports.
